William M. Hunter, a United States Navy officer. Midshipman (1809), Lieutenant (1813, July 24), commander (Mar. 21, 1826), Captain (Feb. 9, 1837). He served with Charles Stewart (1778-1869), on the Constitution, during its cruise to the Windward Islands and later, in 1820-1824, in the Pacific Squadron. Hunter died on March 5, 1849. Isaac Shelby, Kentucky's first governor, was born in Maryland in 1750. As a young man, he served in Lord Dunmore's War and the Revolutionary War, from which he emerge as one of the heroes of the Battle of King's Mountain, South Carolina. Following the war, he and his bride, Susannah Hart, moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky, where he quickly became a leader in Kentucky politics.
